Formation and Organization
The Conservation Burial Alliance (CBA) was formed in 2017 by current stewards and operators of conservation burial cemeteries throughout the US to provide peer and public information. IRS recognition of 501(c)3 status is pending. |
Identity Statement
We are a dedicated group of owners, operators, advocates, and partners working together to support the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of conservation land that incorporates natural burial cemeteries. |
|
What We Stand For
As conservation burial advocates, we seek to provide social and ecological spaces that sustain us and sustain the planet by protecting land with conservation value. We believe natural burial is a choice that connects grieving people with nature at a profound moment while promoting environmental benefits of clean air, healthy natural habitats, carbon sequestration, and climate change mitigation through natural burial. |
CBA Mission Statement
The Conservation Burial Alliance is a collaborative of conservation burial grounds and invested allies that fosters the conservation and sustainable management of land with natural burial for the benefit of people and the planet. For Vision, Values, and Purpose, go to Our Mission. |

There are currently 500+ natural burial cemeteries in the US, with a handful engaged with a land trust organization. To see the complete list, go to Green Burial Cemeteries in the US and Canada. The Green Burial Council offers a voluntary third-party certification at the conservation level; not all cemeteries choose to participate in certification. Conservation burial cemeteries under easement or agreement follow best practices as defined by the conservation and conservation burial communities.

I would request that my body, in death, be buried, not cremated, so the energy content contained within it gets returned to the Earth."
